Heritage & Distillery

Stolichnaya — universally known as Stoli — occupies a position of considerable historical significance in the global vodka narrative. Its origins trace back to the Soviet era, where it served as the state's flagship export vodka, and its journey through the complexities of post-Soviet privatisation, trademark disputes, and brand repositioning constitutes one of the more colourful corporate histories in the spirits industry. The vodka is now produced at the Latvijas Balzams distillery in Riga, Latvia, a facility of genuine pedigree that combines modern production technology with a respect for traditional Eastern European distilling principles.

The blend of wheat and rye used in Stoli's production is a deliberate choice that seeks to marry the clean smoothness of wheat with the spicy complexity of rye — a philosophical approach that distinguishes it from single-grain competitors and contributes to a character that is at once familiar and subtly distinctive. The glacial water used for dilution, sourced from deep artesian wells, adds a mineral purity that complements the grain character without imposing itself upon it.

Production

Stoli undergoes quadruple distillation in continuous column stills, a process that achieves a commendable degree of purity while retaining sufficient congeners to preserve the spirit's personality. The subsequent triple charcoal filtration is conducted with restraint — enough to polish any remaining rough edges, not so much as to render the vodka characterless. The result is a spirit that occupies the middle ground between austere neutrality and assertive personality, a balance that has served it well across decades of shifting consumer preferences.

It is worth noting that Stoli's production philosophy — multiple distillation combined with careful filtration and high-quality water — represents something of a textbook approach to premium vodka-making, executed with a consistency that speaks to the institutional experience of the Latvijas Balzams facility.

Tasting Notes

On the nose, Stoli presents a clean grain character with subtle white pepper, a whisper of dried herbs, and faint citrus peel that adds brightness without excess. The palate confirms a smooth, velvety spirit with gentle sweetness, soft cereal notes, and a delicate mineral quality that lends the vodka a certain gravitas. The finish is medium in length, clean, and warmed by a gentle peppery note that fades with quiet dignity.

Verdict

At seven out of ten, Stoli Premium represents excellent value — a quadruple-distilled vodka of genuine competence and quiet charm that performs admirably both neat and in cocktails. It may lack the dramatic complexity of the finest Polish ryes or the opulent creaminess of top-tier potato vodkas, but within its price bracket it remains a thoroughly reliable and pleasingly crafted spirit. A stalwart of the back bar and a sensible choice for the home drinks cabinet alike.

Third bottle in and it just gets better. The nose opens with dried herbs — I also picked up delicate notes that the review mentions. On the palate, soft cereal notes is spot on, and there's a Smooth and velvety with a gentle sweetness that makes this incredibly smooth. The finish closes with clean with a gentle peppery warmth that fades gracefully. This has become my go-to. Makes an incredible Martini too.

As someone who's been appreciating quality vodka for years, this is among the finest I've encountered at this price point. On the nose I get faint citrus peel — let it warm slightly in the glass and the aromas open up. The palate is where it really shines: soft cereal notes with Well-mannered and approachable. Latvijas Balzams has clearly mastered their craft.

I was reading the tasting notes in the review and thought they sounded too good to be true for a vodka, but they're accurate. The dried herbs is genuinely there, the soft cereal notes delivers, and the clean with a gentle peppery warmth that fades gracefully is exactly as described. Served this at a tasting with friends last weekend — everyone was surprised how much character it has. We did a blind comparison against two other brands and this won hands down.

Not terrible but not worth the premium. The nose promised Clean grain with subtle white pepper and faint citrus peel, but the palate is flat and the clean with a gentle peppery warmth that fades gracefully disappears too quickly. I've had better vodkas at half the price. The a delicate mineral quality the review describes wasn't apparent to me. Perhaps I got a bad bottle.
